Beginners Guide on How To Draw Cars

It may seem tough and look difficult, but learning how to draw cars is not that hard. Most people fail in their attempt to draw cars before they even start. It starts with your mental state. If you tell yourself that it is too hard without even trying, then you will never actually put the pencil to paper. When you first begin to draw cars you will envision a beautiful vehicle with tons of curves and details, and maybe you will be unsure of how or where to start.

Erase that mental block and look at the car for what it really is, a series of small shapes. Break the car you want to draw down into small parts and shapes. Look at the car as a series of smaller step-by-step processes. If you break it down like this, than it will be easier to draw, as you will have smaller pieces that you will put together to make a whole. In learning how to draw cars you need to have a basic understanding of geometric shapes. That is, after all, what a car actually is.

So, let's walk through the steps of drawing a typical 4 door car. Learn the basics of how to draw a car and then you can expand on that and advance your skills.

• Begin by drawing a simple, long rectangle. This will form the basis of your car and will determine it's overall length.
• Now, draw a smaller rectangle right on top of the first. Don't center the smaller one, but place it about two thirds towards the back. This smaller rectangle will form the basic outline of the cab of your car.
• Draw two squares, one towards the front of the large rectangle, the second towards the back. These will be the tires. The type of car you are drawing will determine where you should put the tires. For our example, let's put the front one so that the rear edge of the tire lines up with the front edge of the small rectangle on top, and the rear one centered on the back edge of the small rectangle.

Now we have a very crude, basic foundation for our car. Don't worry if it doesn't look great right now, this phase is just to map out our car and determine the location and sizes of the components.

• Begin drawing in the details; windshield, windows, side mirrors, door handles, lights, bumpers, etc... Keep it all to the basic geometric shapes at this stage, remember we just want to get everything in place for right now.
• OK, now the fun part; start to round everything off to look like actual car parts. Smooth out all the lines and erase the parts you don't need. This is like whittling wood to make a statue. Take away the stuff you don't need to reveal the statue underneath. Draw diagonal lines in the small rectangle to form the top and windshield and erase the edges. It may not be perfect at first and that is ok. This is where your artistic side will jump in. Play around with things until you feel like it's right.
